Nothofagus antarctica

Antarctic Beech, a native tree to Chile and Argentina, may have the "feel" of an evergreen when it is in leaf, being covered in small, glossy, almost heart-shaped crinkled leaves, but it is definitely deciduous. When young the tree may benefit from staking as it has a tendency to branch laterally, and can be very irregular in shape. Chocolate coloured bark with silvery-grey, horizontal lenticels adds winter interest. Tolerates wind & drought when establisded.
