Chionanthus virginicus
White Fringe Tree or Old-man's-beard is a very attractive shrub (or small tree). Blooms on previous year's growth, abundantly and at an early age. Slightly fragrant flowers are white, strap-like, 4-5 petals and borne in 15-20cm long, fleecy panicles. When the tree is in bloom it's wrapped up in a continuous "fraying fringe"! Foliage colour can vary in intensity and will turn yellow in fall. Small egg-shaped drupes (1.3-1.7cm or 1/2 to 2/3" long) in late-summer are mostly hidden by the foliage.
