Hackberry is a large tree tolerant of harsh (wind,urban) conditions and adaptable to many soil types, but prefers rich soil. Native to Quebec. Broad top with ascending, then arching branches. Light green foliage, yellow green fall colour and cork-like rough bark (with warts & ridges). Lime green inflorescence as leaves emerge. Birds like the orange-red to purple small fruit which is like a cherry, with a very hard seed.

Celtis occidentalis 'Prairie Sentinel'

Prairie Sentinel Hackberry is a new selection from J. F. Schmidt with a tightly fastigiate columnar form. Discovered in western Kansas and is adaptable to heat, drought and cold. A narrow city tree for the tougher climates! Medium green foliage turns yellow in fall.
