Shade and Ornamental Trees: Poncirus (Hardy Orange)

Poncirus trifoliata

Hardy Orange is often more a shrub than a tree, with "deadly" 2.5-5cm spikes adorning its branches. The citrus related fruit is sour and seedy but can be used to flavour adult beverages. Glossy, green trifoliate foliage emerges yellowish-green and turns yellowish in fall. 5-petaled white flowers in mid-spring (some detect fragrance) are followed by rounded, yellowish fruit (4cm diam). These hardy oranges, when left on the plant, provide ornamental interest in winter in combination with the spiky green stems! Drought tolerant. ZONE 5 IF (PROTECTED)
